STITCHES AND CRAFT SHOW

The Craft show was a wonderful success.  Thank you to all who helped by painting items for sale and/or manning the stall.  We sold Christmas decorations as we usually do but we decorated the back of the stall with member's projects.  It did look pretty (well I thought so!) and we sold all our decorations!  Some of our out-of-towners painted items and posted them in.  Thank you so much for that, the pieces were beautiful and assured us that we were part of a larger community.   An interesting note: quite a few people came to the stall looking for a teacher.  They had painted in the past and wanted to pick it up again.  We helped with our teacher's list but so far they have not decided to join our ranks, but maybe there is going to be turn in the craft and we will pick up members again.

We had a lovely visit by Wendy Donoghue from Grafton who helped with the stall for two days.  I am told they had a lot of fun on those days....  Thanks Wendy.

Our raffle was won by Sandra Hundloe of Chapel Hill and will be delivered to her soon.

Deirdre busily decorating the stall

Adding the painted bags.  They sold out in two days

A lovely photo of Vi and our completed stall.  They painting of boats in harbour was our raffle.

This gorgeous painting was on a topper for a bottle to give filled with goodies.  Faye painted it on a circle of calico and attached to the top of the bottle with a lovely red ribbon

These were small bags about 6"x6" and were very popular with the little girls

Some of the items sent to us from out of town

This fun painting and the one above were done by Vi.  Aren't they great

We were asked at the last minute to put an entry into the Woman's Weekly Challenge.  Below is our offering.  We didn't win first prize????? but each entry received $150.00 worth of books from the Woman's Weekly.  This consisted of three books, one on knitting and two very large tombs on cooking.  All lovely books.  We decided that three names of all who helped at the show would be drawn to receive the books.  Those details will be in our next newsletter.

We were asked to write in 50 words or less the inspiration for our piece.  Gum flowers and wattle were chosen being Australian flowers, the title was in green and gold, again Australian colours, the cupcake was in reference to their celebration with a 'High Tea', and the images around the cupcake are covers of Woman's Weekly from 1935 to 2013.

So if you came to the show I hope you had a great time and hope to see you again next year.  Remember we will be back in March with a larger stand and lessons.

SHOW AND TELL

Just a couple of pics from our October meeting.

I painted these bags for sale at our October Craft Show

I had to show you this!  It's Jenny's handbag, isn't it gorgeous!

OCOTBER MEETING

Our October meeting was a lovely workshop taught by Judy Minter.  Judy chose a pattern from Kay Kairahnel's book (permission granted).  We started with a cream background and then stencilled in the basic 'chook'.  A rather scary wash of burnt umber over all of that and then detailing in the feathers, and everything else.  We all enjoyed this technique even though we doubted it when we put that dark wash over the bird.

Judy in teaching mode

This is my 'chook' and I lost some detail so cheated by fingering in some white

Deirdre is relaxing awhile as Jenny and Carolyn labour on

This is Judy's finished piece.  Love that wire don't you?

Mary is contemplating her next step. I think it may be a cup of coffee

Can you see that dark wash..... Vi is handling it very well

Carolyn is bringing out the detail

Judy encouraging Mary.

A finished 'chook'

Hmmm....  this one is sideways. Sorry.

They all looked good, didn't they

Deirdre's work is so neat and her brush strokes are always soft and precise

All of the 'chooks' above are from other painters

The finished project!  All looked great

SEPTEMBER MEETING

It was a very quiet meeting this month, probably because of the voting and several of our members being away on hols.  We did resolve a few things and organise the staffing of the Guild Stand at the Quilt and Craft Show next month.  If you are in town please come to the show and visit us.  It is being held at the Convention Centre from 16th to 20th October, opening at 9.00 am and closing 5.00 pm.  We would love to see you and have a chat.

Gail is busy painting ornaments for sale at the Craft Show, Deirdre is delivering her Treasurer's report.

This is the front of Gail's brush wallet. Very nice isn't it.

Vi is working away on another Memory Box.  She has painted so many of late as she is still recovering from a broken ankle and can't get out and about as much as usual.  She also baby sits her delightful grand daughter every day, so her days are full.

Trish is working on an oval piece.  Beautiful poppies I think.  She has made a good start.

WORKSHOP AT HOBBY CRAFT AND GAMES

This beautifully painted oyster clock is being taught by Donna May at Hobby Craft and Games on 9 or 10th November.  Cost for day - Oyster clock, $115.00 or Powder Bowl - $100.  Cost includes 1/2 sheet mother of pearl, pattern packet, turned wood piece, tuition, and Kerry's famous morning tea!!  As the wooden pieces need to be hand turned please book well before hand so they can be completed.

OCTOBER PROJECT

Our October meeting will be a project taught by Judy Minter.  This is a lovely painting designed by Kay Kairahnel (hope I spelt that correctly) who has given permission for it to be taught by others.  Judy will prepare a 30 x 35cm piece of mdf and we start with a stencil and then go from there.  Cost is $25.00  for members and $30 for non-members.  Bring your own painting gear and a stencil brush.  Morning and afternoon tea is provided but bring your own lunch.  Set up will be 9.00 am as usual.  Please email dfaqinc@gmail.com to book in.

AUGUST MEETING

We had a lovely social day this month.  It was a soup and slice day where some of us made a soup, others brought bread and a sweet for afters.  It was fun and just right for the weather.  The soups were Red Lentil Soup (in last newsletter) and Cauliflower Cheese soup (don't count the calories!).  Judy Minter also made a beetroot soup which had a lovely bite to it.  We painted our own projects and generally enjoyed each other's company.  We may have another catered day in the future with quiche and salad or gourmet sandwiches.

Judy and Vi are enjoying the soup.

Donna is intent using the Ipad......hmmmmm.....is that the sound of a game I hear?

Trish was brushing up a storm, base coating an oval in MDF.

Someone has a lot of pens don't they.

Judy and Jenny are researching a site to visit on an up and coming road trip.

Mary is painting a little fairy, everyone else is busy.

The soup station.  We brought in our slow cookers to bring the soup up to heat.

Cauliflower and Cheese Soup

Red Lentil Soup.

At our September meeting we will be painting for the October Craft Show.  We should have a good 'show and tell' that day.  We may even put together another catered day as it much easier than remembering to bring your own lunch and obviously painters are good caterers as well.  Who would have thought??

If you would like to join us, we set up at 9.00 am, have a short meeting at 10.00 am and then paint till afternoon.  There is a $5.00 meeting fee and morning and afternoon tea is supplied.

DONNA'S BEAUTIFUL CUPBOARD

This delightful cupboard is a workshop at Hobby Crafts and Games with Donna May teaching.  The cupboard was made for the workshop and painted in Deep Plum and Cream.  Donna's work is always beautiful and she is a wonderful teacher.  Thanks for showing us Donna.

MEMORY BOXES IN JULY

I am always needing painted boxes and I am so pleased to receive them at our meetings.  The talent and love shows in these images and thank you to all who paint for this very worthwhile project.

Faye painted one of her beautiful fairies on this box which had already some decorative images on it.

This little Panda and all the boxes below were painted by Vi.  Vi is still recovering from her broken ankle and uses most of her spare time painting boxes for me.  Her not being so mobile is a bonus for the Memory Box Program.  Thanks Vi
